Bellator Pay Per View Results: Tito Ortiz and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

bellator-pay-per-view-resultsFor better or worse, Bellator’s first pay-per-view carried on as scheduled, if not with the original main event scheduled.  After the loss of the rubber match between Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler, the promotional outfit soldiered on by banking on the name of former Ultimate Fighting Championship start, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.  The skeptics, including yours truly, voiced reservations about the legitimacy of the card; the event was a shaky PPV event, even with Alvarez v. Chandler as the centerpiece.  Still, Bellator is looking to finally step out of the shadow of the UFC and plant their flag in the MMA world as a world-renowned promotional company.   The actual numbers will not be known until a later date, but in looking back, one does have to wonder if the entity’s brain trust is concerned with the outcomes.

Although the PPV show hosted some solid bouts, the fact remains that the two fights that will be remembered the most were won by faded MMA stars once involved with the UFC.  This fact presents a conundrum for the promotional outfit as, like it or not, Bellator has to continue to showcase Tito Ortiz and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, even though it is completely obvious that both are well past their expiration date.

How much longer will people continue to tune in?

The Ortiz victory is the bigger dilemma for the promoter, as he was really meant to be more of a name on one of Bellator’s most prized possessions, Alexander Shlemenko. In recent memory, Shlemenko has been advertised as one of the premier MMA fighters in the world and beating Ortiz would give the Russian’s resume some star power to help with this assertion.  During the actual fight, Ortiz looked slow and by no means anywhere near his former self.  Still, he was able submit Shlemenko in the second round of their fight.

Now, some can argue that the Russian was fighting above his best weight but then why take the fight?

The answer is simple: Shlemenko and his advisors felt it was low risk, high reward.  Unfortunately for them, it turned out that a worn Ortiz was still too much for a prime Shlemenko.  Ready or not, Bellator and their fans are left with at least one more “big” fight for Tito.

In the case of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Bellator had obviously put more stock and attention into the former UFC champion.  The company was building him up as evidenced by the two first round knockouts that were orchestrated within the first six months of the partnership.  Pitting him against Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal was really a make-or-break situation for “King Mo”: had Lawal gone on to win, Bellator could market him as “Rampage’s” conqueror.  A loss for “King Mo” is not really a loss for Bellator as Lawal never really captured the heart and attention of fans.

Now that the first PPV is over and done, Bellator can now move on and begin to plot their next major event.  The deck of card they have been dealt may not be exactly what they wanted but the promotional unit has shown resiliency and built enough of a following that a return PPV card soon is not out of the question.  That is, unless this first one completely bombs.  Looks like there is more drama outside of the Bellator cage but, hey, whatever keeps people watching, right?
